Born on September 23, 1951, Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif is a politician and businessman from Pakistan. He has held the position of prime minister since March 2024, having held it from April 2022 to August 2023. He is the Pakistan Muslim League (N)'s (PML-N) president. He was the longest-serving Chief Minister of Punjab, having held the position three times in his previous political career.
In 1988, Shehbaz was elected to the Punjab Provincial Assembly, and in 1990, he was elected to the Pakistan National Assembly. In 1993, he was elected to the Punjab Assembly once more and received the title of Leader of the Opposition. On February 20, 1997, he was initially elected as the chief minister of Punjab, the most populous state in Pakistan. Shehbaz and his family went into self-exile in Saudi Arabia following the 1999 coup attempt in Pakistan, and they returned to the nation in 2007. Following the election of the PML-N to power in Punjab province during the 2008 Pakistani general election, Shehbaz was named Chief Minister for an additional term. In the 2013 general election, he was re-elected to the position of Chief Minister of Punjab three times. He held the position until his party lost the 2018 general election. Shehbaz was well-known as a very capable and conscientious administrator throughout his time serving as chief minister. He was praised for his effective leadership and launched large-scale infrastructure projects in Punjab. In the wake of the Panama Papers investigation, Shehbaz's brother Nawaz Sharif was barred from public office, and Shehbaz was proposed to lead the Pakistan Muslim League-N. Following the 2018 election, he received a nomination for Leader of the Opposition.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) accused Shehbaz and his son Hamza of money laundering in December 2019, leading to the freezing of 23 assets. Shehbaz was detained by the NAB on September 28, 2020, in the Lahore High Court and was charged with money laundering. He was detained until his trial. In a money laundering case, the Lahore High Court granted him bail on April 14, 2021. The Special Court Central in Lahore cleared Shehbaz and Hamza on all charges of money laundering and corruption on October 12, 2022. Amid the 2022 Pakistani political crises, Shehbaz was elected by the National Assembly as Prime Minister on 11 April 2022 after the no-confidence motion against Imran Khan. On 12 August 2023, the parliament was set to expire due to the completion of the five-year tenure. In order to gain more time for elections and other political gains, Shehbaz and the PDM alliance agreed to dissolve the parliament on 9 August 2023, which was approved by the president of Pakistan.
